Install Tether

Tether runs on macOS and on x86_64 and aarch64 Linux. Install it on each machine you want to sync.

Install script (macOS and Linux)

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://tether-cli.com/install.sh | sh

The script finds the build for your system, checks its .sha256 file and installs tether to ~/.local/bin. Run it again to upgrade. The daemon restarts by itself when its binary changes. The script warns when the daemon or your PATH uses another tether.

  • TETHER_INSTALL_DIR sets another directory
  • TETHER_VERSION installs one release, such as 2.1.0
Terminal
curl -fsSL https://tether-cli.com/install.sh | TETHER_VERSION=2.1.0 sh

Homebrew (macOS and Linux)

Terminal
brew tap paddo-tech/tap
brew install tether-cli

Homebrew on Linux uses the same commands.

Release download (Linux)

Each GitHub release has a static Linux build for each CPU. These builds do not need a specific glibc, so they run on any distribution.

  • x86_64: tether-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz
  • aarch64: tether-aarch64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz

Download the tarball and its .sha256 file. Check the checksum. Then put the tether binary in a directory on your PATH.

Terminal
target=x86_64-unknown-linux-musl   # or aarch64-unknown-linux-musl
base=https://github.com/paddo-tech/tether-cli/releases/latest/download
curl -fLO "$base/tether-$target.tar.gz"
curl -fLO "$base/tether-$target.tar.gz.sha256"
sha256sum -c "tether-$target.tar.gz.sha256"
tar -xzf "tether-$target.tar.gz"
install -D -m 755 tether ~/.local/bin/tether

Each tarball holds only the tether binary. The latest URL gets the newest release.

mise

Terminal
mise use -g github:paddo-tech/tether-cli

mise gets the release builds from GitHub. It lists a new release only after its version cache updates, so for a release from the last hours, name the version: github:paddo-tech/tether-cli@2.1.0.

From source

You need Rust 1.91 or later.

Terminal
cargo install --locked --git https://github.com/paddo-tech/tether-cli

Requirements

  • Git, with access to a private repository on GitHub, GitLab or your own server
  • curl, for the OSV malware checks
  • The package managers you sync: Homebrew, npm, pnpm, bun, gem or uv
