GUIDES

Teams and collab

Teams share configs and encrypted secrets through a team Git repository. Collab shares project secrets with the collaborators of a GitHub repository. For an overview, see Team sync.

Team setup

Terminal
# Interactive setup wizard
tether team setup

# Or add a team repository
tether team add git@github.com:org/team-dotfiles.git
  • Tether clones the team repository and links its config folders, such as .claude or .config
  • Tether checks whether you can push to the team repository. With write access, you can push team changes. Without it, the team sync is read-only and you receive updates only

Team secrets

Team secrets use age public-key encryption. Each teammate has their own age identity.

Terminal
# Create your age identity and show your public key
tether identity init
tether identity show

# Add a teammate's public key as a recipient
tether team secrets add-recipient age1... --name alice

# Set and read a secret (encrypted for all recipients)
tether team secrets set API_KEY
tether team secrets get API_KEY

Project secrets

Map Git hosting organizations to the team. Project secrets of repositories in those organizations then go to the team repository. Tether matches projects by their Git remote URL, so each teammate can keep the checkout in another folder.

Terminal
tether team orgs add github.com/acme-corp
tether team projects add .env
tether team projects list

# Move personal project secrets of mapped orgs to the team
tether team projects migrate
tether team projects purge-personal

Team files

Terminal
tether team files list # synced team files
tether team files diff [FILE] # local and team version
tether team files reset [FILE] # take the team version
tether team files promote <FILE> # push a local file to the team repo
tether team files ignore <FILE> # keep a file personal
tether team files unignore <FILE> # sync it with the team again
tether team files local-patterns # files that never sync

Manage teams

Terminal
tether team list # all teams
tether team switch other # turn one team on or off; other teams stay as they are
tether team status
tether team disable # stop team sync, keep the team
tether team remove # remove the team

Collab secrets

Collab shares project secrets, such as .env files, with the collaborators who have write access to a GitHub repository. Tether reads the collaborators with the GitHub CLI, gh. Turn the feature on first:

Terminal
tether config features enable collab_secrets
tether collab init # for the current project
tether collab add .env
tether collab refresh # re-encrypt for the current collaborators

A collaborator joins with the URL that collab init prints:

Terminal
tether collab join <URL>
tether collab list
tether collab add-project <PATH> # add another project to a collab
tether collab remove [NAME]
