GUIDES

Keep servers clean

This guide gives your servers only the command-line tools they need. Your laptops keep their desktop apps. It uses profiles.

1. Create the profile

Once, on any machine:

Terminal
tether machines profile create server --managers brew, npm

2. Put each server in the profile

On each server:

Terminal
tether machines profile set server

The server then stops new installs of packages that only your laptops list. It keeps the packages it has.

3. Send tools to the servers

Terminal
tether packages share npm:typescript --to server

Machines in profile server install the package on their next sync.

4. Remove what a server got before

On a server, uninstall a package it got from your laptops. The laptops keep it:

Terminal
tether packages uninstall npm:some-desktop-tool

Check the result

Terminal
tether packages list # each package and its profiles
tether packages list --other-profiles # packages this machine does not install

Machines on 1.x ignore profiles and install the packages of every profile. Make these changes after your 1.x machines are on 1.13.2, or after they upgrade. See Profiles and machines on 1.x.
